Hip Hop
Funk HopFunk Hop is the style of dance John Tanner teaches today. This is a combination of Hip Hop and Funk which blends quick moves with smooth foot work. Funk is fast, powerful and passionate. People like James Brown, Hammer and Michael Jackson have this style. It is what you would see if you were to attend a house party in Oakland. Funk is what you do at parties. Hip HopHip Hop is slower with a lot of posing. It mixes modern dance and jazz moves. This makes it more assessable and commercial. This is what you see in today’s music videos. Many dances, such as Funk, Hip Hop, Boogaloo and Krunk originated in the Black Urban World. Many of the best dancers are not on television and would not be selected for a music video, but their moves are used all the time. What these dancers contribute to the dance world is second to none. John Tanner believes that the best way to appreciate this art form is to know where it comes from. Please do not hesitate to come up and ask John about this art form. He enjoys telling stories of his being the high school mascot and being a regular on soul train as well as many others. John has not taken a dance class in his life and is so well known in the local dance world that he has never had to audition for a job. There is much to be learned from all of his experience. AttireIn order to move freely, it is necessary to wear the proper attire. Loose clothing such as running pants, sweats, warm-up or jogging suits, and gym shorts work well. Breathable fabrics are more comfortable. The shoes should be shock absorbent and provide support. Jazz sneakers, such as those by Capezeio and Bloch, or tennis shoes are preferred. This type of dance is full of passion and soul so be sure to bring water and a towel because you will sweat.
